More than 3.96 million people have been reported to be infected by the novel coronavirus globally and 273,974 have died, according to a Reuters tally. Sweden's unusual approach to fighting the pandemic is starting to yield results, according to the country's top epidemiologist. Anders Tegnell, the architect behind Sweden's relatively relaxed response to Covid-19, told local media the latest figures on infection rates and fatalities indicate the situation is starting to stabilise.
The largest of the Oceanic states to not have a confirmed COVID-19 case is the Solomon Islands. With a population just over 600,000, the country's government has not sat idle. On March 25 , a state of public emergency was declared and Honiara has been sending samples to Australia for testing (so far 10 tests have come back negative, with three more suspected cases pending confirmation).
Currently there is an obvious trend of an increasing number of fever patients in the city, and there are long queues at fever clinics and a tight supply of sickbeds for those who need to be kept under observation," the local health commission said (link in Chinese). It added that local authorities have designated more hospitals to take care of fever patients, and to set aside over 3,000 sickbeds for patients with suspected or confirmed cases of the virus.
